Photo Gallery | Photo of the Day: Chenal Elementary kids release butterflies

From Amy Braswell:

Chenal Elementary School students are celebrating Earth Day all week!! Today we released monarch butterflies that have been raised in our classrooms. Three weeks ago, each classroom K-5 received a large milkweed plant, (which is a host plant for monarchs), and several monarch larvae. Almost overnight the larvae grew into very hungry caterpillars that ate the milkweed plant completely down and then transformed into a chrysalis right before our eyes! Over the last few days, all over the building, beautiful monarch butterflies began to emerge from their chrysalis, and today we set them free in our very own butterfly garden in the schoolyard habitat in the hopes that their offspring will return to visit us in the fall as they make their incredible journey to Mexico.
