Firehouse hostel nears completion

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV)- After nearly 8 years of planning and construction, the Little Rock's Firehouse Hostel is nearly complete.

Developers John Fordyce and Greg Hart told THV that the exterior work is done and electrical work will finish up in October meaning the main goal is furnishing the inside of the hostel. "The beds will have a full size on the bottom and then these here are for stacking," said Hart. "It's not like a regular hotel. It's not meant to be a hotel."

The former fire house was built between 1915 and 1917 so the developers had to raise nearly 400,000 for renovations. Upstairs bathrooms for men and women are complete and beds will be moved in once the floors are finished. Fordyce says he hopes to bring his experiences with hostels abroad to Arkansas. "While we were there we were able to talk to other travelers and get their idea on what they thought we ought to get to see," he added. "It's a maturing interest I think and it's getting bigger all the time."
